Focus on sustainable development of the coconut industry
Although the province has a large coconut garden area, the production and processing facilities for coconut products in the province are diverse, the average income from coconut is quite good, but this income is not stable, still depends a lot on the season and weather. In addition, the contribution of the coconut industry is not commensurate with its potential and is still limited in the overall income structure of farming households. It has not created interest and attracted young workers to participate in production activities and get rich on coconut land. Therefore, the province is always interested in finding a comprehensive and diverse production model to improve and enhance the livelihoods of coconut farmers, effectively use agricultural land, build a clean, effective, sustainable agriculture, adapt to climate change, contributing to maintaining the position of the locality on the "world coconut map".
In the context of climate change, increased salinity intrusion and unusual flooding are threats to fruit growing areas, including coconut growing areas. Coconut is a crop that is assessed to be more tolerant of salinity and flooding than other crops.
From the objectives and tasks, solutions of Resolution No. 07-NQ/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on building concentrated production areas, linking the development of value chains of key agricultural products of the province in the period of 2020 - 2025 and orientation to 2030; Program No. 08-CTr/TU of the Provincial Party Committee on developing key industries and business forces of the province in the period of 2020 - 2025, with a vision to 2030, in particular, absorbing the Project on Developing Key Industrial Crops to 2030 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Agriculture and Rural Development sector has implemented it in conjunction with focusing on tasks to develop the province's coconut industry. According to statistics of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the coconut growing area in the province increased rapidly from 51,560 hectares in 2010 to 77,232 hectares in 2022, accounting for 39.7% of the total coconut growing area in the country. The coconut growing area has increased rapidly over the years and is estimated to reach 79,900 hectares by the end of 2024, yielding 708 million fruits. The province's coconut productivity is among the highest, reaching 9,863 fruits/ha/year, equivalent to 1.9 tons of copra/ha, higher than the average of countries in the Asia-Pacific Coconut Association. Recent studies have confirmed the central position of the province on the national and regional coconut industry map, coconut is an industrial crop that plays a very important role in the economic development of the province.
